CPC 2024: Industries and Institutions: Synergies and Struggles

The CPC for 2024 will be held Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th June 2024 at the University of Birmingham, U.K. It will be supported by B-Film, the Birmingham Centre for Film and Television Studies, and the BAFTSS (British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies) Practice Research Special Interest Group. The running order for the day is TBC.

Supported by B-Film at the University of Birmingham and the BAFTSS Practice Research SIG, the 2nd Creative Practice Colloquium will focus broadly on industries and institutions in relation to audio-visual and other practice research. We particularly welcome applications from doctoral students undertaking creative practice research and academics with an industry background. 

​

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Agata Lulkowska (Staffordshire University) as our keynote speaker. 

​

Please note spaces are limited for this in-person event, however the keynote will be delivered in a hybrid format and is open to all.

Thanks to the BAFTSS Practice Research SIG we can fund two travel bursaries of up to £125, towards transport and/or accommodation. If you wish to apply for a bursary, please submit a short application outlining your eligibility and how it may benefit you. Please note that while anyone can apply for this bursary, priority will be given to those who may meet one or more of the following criteria: 

 

  • Current PGR  

  • Disability / Long Term Health Condition 

  • Live in foyer / hostel / shared accommodation 

  • Underrepresented or minority groups, including but not limited to: refugee status, carer, global majority background

Keynote speaker: Dr. Agata Lulkowska

(Staffordshire University)

​

Dr Agata Lulkowska is an interdisciplinary creative practice researcher with a background in film, photography, and multimedia arts.

 

Founder of Rebellious Research Seminar Series for creative practice researchers, co-host of Taming Your Inner Artist Podcast, and Founder and Director of the Communities and Communication Conference and Festival. C3 Research Centre Co-director, Practice as Research group lead, Executive Committee Member at BAFTSS (British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies), a vice chair of the MeCCSA Practice Network (Media, Communication and Cultural Studies Association), Managing Editor of the International Journal of Creative Media Research and editorial board member of Media Practice and Education journal. I am also a former Artistic Director and Head of Programming at the Discovering Latin America Film Festival.

 

Shortlisted for AHRC Research in Film Awards 2021, recipient of the International Award for Excellence for The Journal of Communication and Media Studies (June 2020). Currently appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Film Directing and Producing at Staffordshire University, and actively contributing to the positive culture around supporting practice-based research in filmmaking and other creative media (including extensive practice research PhD supervision). Experienced Research Ethics Coordinator, and a steering member of the Diversity and Decolonisation Group.

 

Upcoming publications include, among others, a monograph on Practice-based Research for Filmmakers, Routledge and a book series on Practice-based Research in the Arts, Intellect.
